About Sarah
Sarah Tyrrell is a new Irish author who combines her grá (love) for the Irish language with her passion for romantasy literature and her fascination with Irish folklore.
Growing up in Ireland, Sarah heard tales of terrifying magical creatures like the banshee and the fir bolg - harbingers of death, pain, and suffering. At the same time, she found herself lost in the stories of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling. The immersive worlds created by these authors, and many others, sparked a lifelong love of fantasy.
It wasn’t long before her imagination took hold, and she began to create fantasy worlds in her own mind, based on creatures from her own culture.
As Sarah grew up, she found herself drawn to dark fantasy, particularly tales set in gothic worlds, steeped in dark magic and morally grey characters. Increasingly, she was frustrated by how Irish folklore was continuously portrayed as bright and cheerful - a far cry from the tragic tales she heard in her childhood.
On her thirty-fourth birthday, Sarah set out to finally breathe life into the characters that she had carried with her since childhood. On her thirty-fifth birthday, she published When Witches Weep, a gothic romantasy that follows a cursed rebel witch through a journey of self-discovery, loss, and love. The novel features a whole host of mythological Irish creatures and beasts, as well as character and place names taken directly from the Irish language, for which it has received high praise from Irish readers.
Sarah currently runs her own business, but hopes to one day be able to write full-time.
Say dia duit (hello)!
Whether you’re a reader or a fellow author, Sarah loves to connect with others who love gothic romantasy as much as she does!
